Tension gripped Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday following a reported armed attack on supporters of former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Edo State governor John Odigie-Oyegun.
According to a video circulating online, suspected hoodlums allegedly stormed the premises and fired sporadically, leaving visible bullet holes on gates and causing damage to vehicles within the compound.
In the footage, Obi lamented the state of the nation’s democracy, pointing to the bullet marks on the gates and the destruction of property. “Hoodlums came, shooting. If you look at the gates, everything, you can see the bullets at the gates. You can see it. They damaged everything. That is where our democracy has reached,” he said.
Another account indicated that the incident occurred shortly after the group departed the headquarters of the African Democratic Congress in Benin and proceeded to Chief Oyegun’s residence. The eyewitness alleged that the attackers began shooting and vandalising vehicles shortly after their arrival.
The source further claimed the attack was politically motivated and linked it to the 2027 general elections, alleging that the perpetrators intended to intimidate opposition figures.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
