INSECURITY!! Lawmaker Distributes Guns As Constituency Project

A member of the House of Representatives representing Funtua Federal Constituency in Katsina State has taken an unusual step to empower his constituents in the fight against persistent bandit attacks.

The lawmaker reportedly procured licensed firearms as part of his constituency project, a move he said was aimed at equipping residents with the means to defend themselves against marauding bandits and terrorist elements that have continually terrorized rural communities in the state.

Images circulating from the constituency showed groups of locals at a community shooting range undergoing familiarization with the weapons. According to reports, the distribution of the firearms was done under the supervision of security authorities to ensure compliance with licensing regulations.

Speaking on the initiative, the lawmaker explained that the move was necessary due to the inability of overstretched security agencies to provide adequate protection to communities across the state. He added that arming responsible members of the community with legally acquired weapons would serve as both a deterrent and a defense mechanism against violent incursions.

Katsina State has been one of the hardest-hit by banditry and terrorist activities in recent years, with frequent reports of kidnappings, killings, and displacement of rural dwellers. Residents of Funtua and surrounding areas have repeatedly called for both government intervention and localized strategies to curb the menace.

While the initiative has sparked debate across social and political circles, many locals have welcomed it as a practical step toward reclaiming their safety and protecting their farmlands. Others, however, have expressed concerns about the long-term implications of civilian armament and have called for stronger federal and state security strategies to address the root causes of insecurity in the region.
