BREAKING: PDP Zones Presidential Ticket to South, Party Chairmanship to North

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of Nigeria while retaining the national chairmanship position in the North.

This decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 102nd meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP held today, Monday, August 25, 2025.

According to the communiqué, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the party’s 2025 elective national convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025.

The NEC also received and approved the report of the National Convention Zoning Committee, which recommended:

  • That all PDP national offices currently in the North remain in the North.
  • That all PDP national offices currently in the South remain in the South.
  • That with the national chairmanship retained in the North, the presidential candidate of the PDP for 2027 is zoned to the South.
  • That each region should immediately micro-zone positions within its areas for implementation.

Additionally, the NEC ratified the appointment of Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the PDP, praising his role in stabilizing the party. His tenure will run until the convention in November.

The NEC also condemned what it described as “state capture” by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of intimidation, inducement, coercion, and militarization during recent bye-elections, particularly in Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara States. The PDP said the APC’s actions threaten democracy and amount to attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

Finally, the PDP reassured Nigerians of its commitment to democracy and citizens’ welfare, vowing to reposition the party to reclaim power in 2027. The NEC adjourned its next meeting to October 15, 2025.

The communiqué was signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.
