Cross-Examination Highlights
During cross-examination by Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), the witness confirmed that all the items belonged to the defendant. He admitted the items themselves were not offensive but suggested that the intent behind their use might be of concern.
PWAAA also acknowledged that he did not analyze the confiscated items himself. His duty, he said, was limited to executing the arrest and obtaining Kanu’s statement. He further stated that although Kanu’s cell phone was analyzed, the resulting report was not tendered in court as it was considered immaterial to the case.
Significantly, the DSS operative conceded that none of the items were linked directly to terrorism, and after ten years in custody, many of them may no longer be functional. He also confirmed that Kanu’s statement was taken without legal representation present and that no individuals were interrogated in Kanu’s presence concerning terrorism.
