Disaster was averted in Zangon Kanya village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State after a petrol tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was involved in an accident.
A resident told DAILY POST that the incident happened on Friday Morning when the driver of the tanker lost control while trying to avoid a head-on collision with another tanker in Zangon Kanya. As a result, the vehicle veered off the road and overturned.
Fuel began spilling from the tanker, prompting some residents to flee the scene while others attempted to scoop the petrol. However, a swift response from security agencies prevented a potential catastrophe as they quickly cordoned off the area.
Police Spokesman SP Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the incident. He said, “The incident happened on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at about 1300hrs. A distress call was received reporting a lone motor vehicle accident involving a Howa trailer, registration number Kano 549 BNK, driven by one Muhammad Ali of Yankatsari village, Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State.”
He explained that the tanker was reportedly carrying 60,000 liters of PMS from Lagos State to Gujungu town in Taura LGA. Upon reaching Zangon Kanya village, the driver attempted to maneuver through a local traffic diversion to avoid an oncoming trailer, lost control, and the vehicle fell off the road, causing the fuel to spill.
SP Shiisu stated that police promptly mobilized other agencies, including the Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and other relevant bodies, to the scene. The entire area was secured to prevent villagers and passersby from scooping the highly flammable fuel.
He added that traffic is currently being effectively managed, with road users diverted far from the scene to avoid any unforeseen developments. So far, there has been no explosion or fire outbreak. The driver, who sustained injuries, was taken to Ringim General Hospital for treatment.
It is worth noting that a similar incident occurred in Majia town, Taura LGA—just a few kilometers away—where over 100 people lost their lives and many others were injured.
