Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has stirred national debate by declaring that former President Muhammadu Buhari, not President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was responsible for the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, which was monitored by NewsLamp, Sumaila stated that the Buhari administration effectively removed the subsidy by omitting it from the national budget beyond June 2023.
According to him, “The government of former President Muhammadu Buhari removed the fuel subsidy because it was not contained in the budget. The provision of fuel subsidy is only from January to June. From that day no fuel subsidy. What Mr President (Tinubu) did was just to announce the removal of fuel subsidy.”
Sumaila's assertion challenges the widespread belief that President Tinubu was responsible for the policy change that led to the end of fuel subsidy payments, which has had significant economic implications.
