The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, implemented changes to the leadership of several standing committees as plenary resumed in Abuja.
Among the affected lawmakers is the former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Simon Lalong, who now chairs the Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters. Lalong, representing Plateau South under the APC, replaces Senator Sharafadeen Ali of Oyo South, also of the APC, who has been chairing the committee since the inauguration of the 10th Senate.
Senator Ali has now been reassigned to lead the Senate Committee on Agricultural Institutions and Research, a position that was previously held by Lalong.
Further reshuffles saw Senator Pam Nwadkon of the PDP (Plateau North) appointed as the new Chairman of the Committee on Tourism, replacing Senator Anthony Ani of APC (Ebonyi South). Ani has been named Vice Chairman of the South East Development Commission, a role formerly occupied by Senator Eze Kenneth from Ebonyi Central.
Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) continues in his role as Chairman of the South East Development Commission.
Also retaining dual roles is Senator Emeka Eze (APC, Ebonyi Central), who remains Chairman of the Committee on Information and Vice Chairman of the Committee on Water Resources.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who made the announcements during plenary, described the reshuffle as part of efforts to streamline and energize legislative activities. He instructed Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to ensure all committees prepare and submit their reports for deliberation.
