Seven Inmates Escape Osun Prison After Rainstorm Damages Security Wall, Authorities Launch Manhunt
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, a heavy rainstorm led to a significant security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, resulting in the escape of seven inmates. The torrential rainfall, which began around 2:00 a.m., caused substantial structural damage to the prison's perimeter fence, creating an opportunity for the inmates to flee.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the incident, stating that an official manhunt has been launched to recapture the escaped prisoners. In a statement issued by the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, the Service described the situation as unfortunate and assured the public that all necessary measures were being taken to restore order and return the fugitives to custody.
“The service is working closely with sister security agencies as well as community leaders to recapture the escapees and bring them back to custody,” the statement read. “However, the Service solicits the cooperation and support of the public in providing information that may lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates.”
The NCoS also released emergency contact lines for members of the public to share any useful information:
- 07087086005
- 09060004598
- 08075050006
The Controller General further directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including a technical assessment of the damage caused by the rainfall and the vulnerability it created within the facility.
This is not the first time extreme weather conditions have compromised the structural integrity of a correctional facility in Nigeria. A similar incident occurred on April 24, 2024, when a torrential downpour caused serious damage to the Suleja Custodial Centre, resulting in the escape of 119 inmates. At least 19 of them were later recaptured, while efforts to track the remaining escapees continued for weeks.
Security operatives in Osun State have intensified patrols and intelligence-gathering operations in and around Ilesa and neighboring communities to prevent the escapees from evading justice. Local residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The Nigerian Correctional Service emphasized its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all custodial centres across the country and pledged to strengthen infrastructure to withstand environmental threats, especially as Nigeria enters a more volatile rainy season.
