A tragic incident has rocked the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI), as a 100-level student of the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) department reportedly slumped and died during an assessment test.
The student, whose identity had yet to be officially disclosed at the time of reporting, collapsed in the course of a routine class test. According to eyewitness accounts, he was immediately rushed to the school’s health centre and subsequently referred to the state hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Confirming the heartbreaking incident, the Speaker of the SLT Department, Hon. Babawale John Akinkunmi, issued a formal statement expressing profound sorrow and extending condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and classmates. The speaker described the development as “unfortunate” and called for a thorough review of the conditions surrounding test procedures in the department.
In his words:
“This unfortunate incident has deeply shaken us all, and we must honour the life lost by working collectively to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.”
The speaker further assured students that consultations were ongoing with departmental authorities and test coordinators to reform academic exercise protocols, ensuring that safety, fairness, and dignity are prioritized.
Students have been urged to remain calm and united as the institution processes the loss and implements reforms. The university community mourns with heavy hearts, hoping the incident serves as a wake-up call for improved health and safety systems during academic engagements.
May the soul of the departed rest in peace.
