Meet HRH Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, The Veteran Comedian "Okey Bakassi" The Crowned King Of Imo State

 


Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor, Okey Bakassi, has been crowned the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State. Bakassi, whose real name is Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, now bears the title HRH Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, The OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community.

With a career spanning over three decades, Okey Bakassi has made a significant impact in the entertainment industry, winning several accolades including the "Best Actor in a Leading Role" at the 2014 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in the movie Onye Ozi.

Before his ascension to the throne, he served as the Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment to the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma. His coronation marks a notable shift from entertainment to traditional leadership, where he is now committed to community service.

In a social media post, Bakassi expressed deep gratitude to the Umuihuocha community, describing the new role as "NEXT LEVEL... Service to Community" and called it "a new beginning." The announcement drew congratulatory messages from top Nigerian celebrities such as Ali Baba, Yaw, Kcee, Acapella, and Frank Edoho.

As a monarch, HRH Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering cultural preservation and driving development within his community. His coronation signifies a remarkable new chapter—transforming from a beloved entertainer to a revered traditional ruler.
