JUST IN: Governor Seeks Russian Partnership to Boost State’s Mining Sector

In a strategic move to revamp Niger State’s mining industry, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has visited St. Petersburg Mining University in Russia to establish a technical and academic partnership aimed at unlocking the full potential of the state’s natural resources.

The governor engaged in high-level talks with university authorities to explore collaboration in education, research, and technical development. The partnership is expected to provide advanced training for students and professionals, focusing on modern mining techniques, safety standards, and environmental sustainability.

Governor Bago emphasized that the initiative aligns with his administration’s vision to empower the local workforce with 21st-century skills, attract foreign investment, and promote sustainable mining practices. He announced plans to send an Executive Bill titled “Responsible Mining” to the Niger State House of Assembly, seeking to regulate mining operations, protect the environment, and ensure legal accountability.

The collaboration with St. Petersburg Mining University — a globally respected institution in mining education and technology — is expected to foster joint research, technical exchange programs, and policy development that will enhance efficiency and oversight in the sector.

Governor Bago expressed confidence that the initiative will generate job opportunities, boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and elevate Niger State’s economic profile on both national and international fronts.
