A student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in what is believed to be a cult-related attack near the institution.
Eyewitnesses say the student, who remains unidentified, had just concluded his examinations and was heading toward the college’s back gate when he was approached by armed men and shot at close range. The incident sent panic through the student community as bystanders fled for safety.
Reports suggest the attackers recovered a firearm and a bullet from the victim’s bag, fueling suspicions of cult rivalry. A source claimed the killing was retaliation for a previous attack involving suspected cult members.
While the school’s spokesperson, Adekunle Adams, clarified that the incident occurred outside the institution’s premises, at a nearby lounge—the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the cult-related killing. Police PRO CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said seven suspects had been arrested, and an investigation was ongoing.
“Upon arrival, our officers found the body with bullet wounds. Four live rounds of ammunition and charms were also recovered from the deceased,” he stated, adding that the body has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
Authorities have urged students and the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
