Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his deputy, Monday Onyeme, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State.
During the defection announcement, Oborevwori promised to deliver 1.4 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. A statement from his office said the realignment would significantly boost APC's political strength in the South-South.
However, political observers view the governor’s target as unrealistic, noting that in the 2023 presidential election, Delta State registered over 3.2 million voters, but only about 615,000 valid votes were cast — with the Labour Party's Peter Obi winning the majority.
Historically, APC has struggled in Delta and the broader South-South region, where it only secured 28% of the vote in 2023. Analysts suggest that despite the new alliance, capturing the Delta vote for Tinubu in 2027 will be a major challenge.
