Four hunters from Kano State have been apprehended by security operatives in Edo State for illegal possession of firearms. The suspects, Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu, were intercepted at Big Joe Motors in Ramat Park, Orogbeni Quarters, and subsequently arrested at Americanus Hotel located on Osemwenkhae Street, Benin City.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the arrest was carried out after members of the Edo State Security Corps discovered suspicious items hidden in the suspects’ luggage during a routine check. Among the recovered items were three dane guns, six empty cartridges, three half-filled cartridges, four cutlasses, and two daggers.
The suspects, who hail from Doguwa in Kano State, reportedly told investigators they were en route to Uvbe Community in the Orhionwon Local Government Area of Edo State for a hunting expedition. However, authorities raised concerns about the timing and circumstances of their journey, especially in light of recent security developments in the state.
Speaking on the matter, CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, clarified that the individuals were hunters and not herdsmen, as was being speculated on social media platforms.
“They were intercepted by a member of the Edo Security Network and found in possession of firearms and other weapons. Preliminary investigation suggests they are hunters, not herdsmen as falsely circulated online
