BREAKING: Mojisola Meranda Becomes New Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly After Mudashiru Obasa’s Impeachment
Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa I constituency, has been elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This appointment comes after the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, due to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Prior to her election as Speaker, Meranda served as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, gaining significant experience in the legislative processes. Her rise to the role of Speaker marks a historic moment, as she becomes the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the Assembly.
The impeachment of Obasa was preceded by serious allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of power. In December 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was petitioned to investigate Obasa over allegations of embezzling funds through proxy companies and violating procurement regulations. The Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State, filed a petition that accused Obasa of using his office to mismanage public funds, including a controversial N17 billion project for the construction of a gate at the Assembly premises.
Obasa, however, denied these allegations, describing them as politically motivated and unfounded. Despite his rebuttals, the Lagos House of Assembly moved forward with his impeachment, signaling a shift in leadership aimed at ensuring greater accountability in the state's legislature.
Following Obasa's removal, the newly elected Speaker, Hon. Meranda, is expected to guide the Assembly with a focus on transparency, efficiency, and addressing the pressing issues facing Lagos State. The political landscape in the state is expected to undergo significant changes as the new leadership takes charge.
