Tensions have risen sharply in Nigeria following the release of a new Biafra map by the Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government in Exile. This significant development comes amid Ekpa’s appeal to Finnish President Alexander Stubb for support in recognizing the Biafra Independence Declaration as a path to peace in Nigeria and across the Sahel region.
On Wednesday, Ekpa shared details on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that his group had submitted a formal letter to President Stubb on Monday. The letter articulated the reasons for seeking Biafra’s secession, emphasizing the belief that restoring Biafra as an independent state could foster stability in the region. Ekpa stated that the primary aim of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile includes organizing an internationally recognized referendum for Biafra’s independence by the end of November 2024.
The letter also highlighted that Biafra previously held recognition from five United Nations member states, distinguishing it from other secessionist movements in Africa. This claim, according to Ekpa, underscores Biafra’s unique historical and political significance, warranting global attention and support for its renewed independence efforts.
The public display of the new Biafra map and Ekpa’s statements have reignited a sensitive and divisive issue within Nigeria, where the Biafra secessionist movement continues to be a point of national contention.
