Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago announced a new ambitious target for the state’s minimum wage, setting sights on ₦1 million for state civil servants. Speaking at the Government House in Minna on Friday, Governor Bago introduced an initial increase to ₦80,000 following a productive meeting with the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Governor Bago emphasized that the ₦80,000 wage increase marks the beginning of a larger economic plan, fueled by strategic agricultural investments. “This is very sustainable,” he said. “With our strides in agriculture, I am confident that we can achieve a minimum wage of ₦1 million. We are creating a civil service farm so that civil servants can be more productive. With this model, we believe that paying ₦1 million as minimum wage is attainable.”
The governor assured that the new wage increment would apply to both state and local government civil servants. He confirmed that the initial ₦80,000 wage had already been implemented with this month’s salary payments, and full rollout will continue in November.
