Omoregie, a professor specializing in constitutional law and governance, will formally assume office on December 1, 2024, succeeding the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lillian Salami, whose impactful tenure concludes at the end of November. His selection followed a rigorous recruitment process, with Omoregie emerging as the top candidate from a pool of 27 applicants vying for the esteemed role. The Governing Council Chair, Prof. Umaru, spoke highly of Omoregie's expertise, describing him as a "renowned constitutional law scholar and leader who will guide UNIBEN towards new academic and institutional heights." Umaru further emphasized that Omoregie’s appointment aligns with UNIBEN's commitment to academic excellence, forward-looking governance, and national relevance in educational leadership.

Born on April 5, 1969, in Benin City, Professor Omoregie has deep-rooted ties to the University of Benin. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees at the institution, laying a solid foundation for his prolific academic journey. Following his call to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, Omoregie's career has spanned both academia and practice, culminating in his elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2021.

Omoregie’s contributions extend beyond academia; he is recognized for his involvement in advancing legal research and his significant influence on governance frameworks in Nigeria. His expertise in constitutional law has seen him participate in various government consultations, policy reviews, and international forums, bolstering his reputation as an intellectual and public servant.

In his address following the announcement, Professor Omoregie expressed deep gratitude to the Governing Council for the opportunity to lead his alma mater. "My vision for UNIBEN is one rooted in innovation, integrity, and inclusivity," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a culture that fosters both academic rigor and a supportive environment for students and staff alike.

Omoregie outlined his key priorities, which include enhancing research infrastructure, expanding international collaborations, and creating pathways for student success in an increasingly competitive global landscape. "Education is the foundation of societal transformation, and it is my goal to ensure that UNIBEN remains at the forefront of this mission in Nigeria and beyond," he stated.

As he prepares to assume office, Omoregie commended Professor Lillian Salami’s impactful leadership over the past years, noting her dedication to advancing UNIBEN’s reputation nationally and internationally. Prof. Salami has been lauded for her commitment to fostering an inclusive academic community and her strategic efforts to strengthen the university's partnerships and academic programs.

With Professor Edoba Omoregie’s appointment, stakeholders, alumni, and the university community at large have expressed optimism about the future of UNIBEN under his stewardship. As the 11th Vice-Chancellor, Omoregie is expected to bring transformative leadership that will enhance the institution's standing and provide students with valuable skills, knowledge, and opportunities.
