HAPPENING NOW! Chaos Erupts as House of Reps Reject Bill Seeking Expanding of Sharia Law in Nigeria.

The House of Representatives has rejected a proposed bill aimed at broadening the application of Sharia law in Nigeria, following a debate among members. The bill, introduced by Aliyu Missau, sought to amend sections of the Constitution by removing the word "personal" from provisions concerning Sharia law, which would have expanded its scope beyond individual matters like marriage and inheritance. Missau argued that the amendment would support commercial entities, including Jaiz and Taj banks, which adhere to Islamic principles and face challenges under the current interpretation of Sharia law.

The bill sparked a slight debate among members, with lawmakers expressing mixed views. Many representatives voiced concerns that the amendment could increase Sharia's influence, potentially affecting religious freedoms. Bamidele Salam, representing Osun State, argued that the bill could disrupt the existing religious equilibrium in Nigeria. "We must be cautious with any constitutional changes that could deepen divisions in Nigeria. Besides, the issues my colleague aims to address are already covered by existing laws," he stated.

Similarly, Awaji-Inombek Abiante warned that passing the bill could pose risks, calling for its withdrawal. Meanwhile, some northern lawmakers defended the proposal, asserting it posed no threat to national unity.

Ultimately, strong opposition prevailed, with lawmakers warning against any measures that could undermine religious freedoms. When put to a vote by Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu, the majority of the House voted against the proposal, with the “nays” carrying the day.
