...Triggers New Political Push In Enugu
A major political development has emerged ahead of the 2027 general elections as renowned academic and international jurist, Professor Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji, PhD, has officially picked the Expression of Interest form of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest for the Enugu East Senatorial seat.
The development, which took place in Abuja, marks a significant return of the globally respected scholar to active partisan politics, further intensifying early contestations in the Enugu East senatorial race.
Speaking to journalists shortly after obtaining the form, Prof. Nnaji declared his readiness for the party screening and primary election scheduled to commence on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, and conclude on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. He emphasized that his decision to enter the race was driven by what he described as “trust, credibility, and proven capacity.”
According to him, his aspiration followed extensive consultations with stakeholders across political, academic, and community circles, adding that his ambition is anchored on service rather than personal ambition.
“I have consulted widely and I am fully prepared to serve. My focus is to represent the people of Enugu East Senatorial District with unwavering commitment to their welfare, dignity, and collective interests,” he stated.
The Amurri-born scholar further referenced his long-standing engagement in political and academic leadership, noting that his past experiences have prepared him for effective legislative representation. He recalled his participation in the 2023 Enugu State governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he eventually stepped down in support of the incumbent governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, in what he described as a move guided by political maturity and strategic alignment for stability.
He also pointed to his earlier senatorial ambition in 2019 for Enugu East Senatorial District under the Kingship Party (KP), stating that his continuous involvement in electoral contests reflects a sustained commitment to public service and governance reform.
Prof. Nnaji’s academic and professional pedigree remains one of the most distinguished in contemporary Nigerian political discourse. He is a Professor of International Law and Global Politics at the University of Kansas Law School, United States of America, with a robust portfolio of international academic publications spanning global governance, comparative constitutional law, and international relations.
He also serves in high-level judicial and advisory capacities within global legal institutions, including reported engagements within international judicial frameworks in The Hague, Netherlands, reflecting his standing within global legal and diplomatic circles. Over the years, he has received multiple international recognitions, including a Merit Award from the University of Naples II, Italy, in recognition of his academic excellence and contributions to legal scholarship.
Beyond academia, Prof. Nnaji has been actively involved in institutional development processes in Nigeria, including participation in academic leadership contests such as consideration for Vice-Chancellorship positions in Nigerian universities, where his reform-driven ideas on education governance and institutional restructuring have consistently stood out.
Observers describe him as a scholar-statesman with rare intellectual depth, combining global exposure with grassroots political engagement. His career trajectory—spanning academia, international legal discourse, and active electoral participation—has continued to position him as a unique figure in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
The latest move under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is seen as a renewed and strategic re-entry into the political space, signaling what analysts describe as a recalibrated bid to secure legislative office and influence policy direction at the federal level.
While the 2027 political season gradually gathers momentum, Prof. Nnaji’s entry into the Enugu East senatorial race is expected to reshape early calculations within the district, introducing a candidate with a blend of global academic pedigree and sustained political experience.
The development marks another decisive step in his evolving political journey as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections.
