Why We Attended ADC National Convention –UK Government

The (FCDO) has clarified the participation of officials from the at the national convention of the (ADC), describing the engagement as part of routine diplomatic practice.

The explanation follows reports that a three-member delegation from the British High Commission attended the convention held in Abuja. According to the ADC, the delegation was led by Political Secretary Thomas Samson and included a Nigerian staff member, Damilola Oyedele.

There were also claims that was present at the event. However, the denied the report, stating that neither the ambassador nor any of its officials attended the convention, and that an individual identified at the venue was not known to the mission.

Responding to enquiries, an FCDO spokesperson noted that diplomatic missions regularly engage with a wide range of political and civic actors, including political parties, as part of efforts to support democratic processes.

The office further stated that such engagements reflect the United Kingdom’s commitment to promoting credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections in Nigeria through cooperation aimed at strengthening democratic institutions.

While diplomatic contact with political stakeholders is common, public participation at party conventions remains relatively rare, especially where officials are formally acknowledged.

The ADC, which is positioning itself as a key opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, has recently attracted growing attention and participation from prominent political figures across the country.
