Claims That Prof. Jehu Nnaji Fled Political Contest in PDP Out of Fear Are Baseless and Misguided

....Prof. Jehu Nnaji is a Man of Conviction, Not Capitulation

In the ever-evolving theatre of politics, it is not uncommon for baseless claims to be weaponized in an attempt to diminish credible figures. Such is the case with the recent proposition that “ran away” from the (PDP) due to the emergence of another aspirant. This assertion, lacking in substance and evidence, collapses under the weight of Prof. Nnaji’s well-documented pedigree, courage, and consistency in public life.

To begin with, context matters. Prof. Nnaji is not a political novice testing uncertain waters; he is a seasoned intellectual and administrator whose life trajectory reflects resilience, boldness, and an unwavering commitment to service. Hailing from Amurri in Nkanu West Local Government Area, he embodies a heritage synonymous with strength and resolve. As rightly asserted, Amurri does not produce cowards—and Prof. Nnaji’s life story stands as a testament to this enduring truth.

A cursory look at his track record dismantles any notion of political retreat. In 2015, he courageously contested for the position of Vice-Chancellor at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), presenting reform-driven ideas in a highly competitive environment. In 2019, he stepped into the political arena as a senatorial candidate for Enugu East, further demonstrating his willingness to subject himself to the rigors of democratic contest.

By 2023, he had elevated his ambition to the governorship race under the PDP, where he ran an issue-based campaign that earned him widespread respect. Not one to relent in his pursuit of institutional excellence, he again contested for the Vice-Chancellorship of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in 2024. This is not the résumé of a man who retreats at the sight of opposition; it is the profile of a relentless contender who consistently puts himself forward in the service of ideas and progress.

The claim, attributed to one Ganfuwa, that Prof. Nnaji exited the PDP out of fear of an unnamed “Odera man” is not only speculative but fundamentally flawed. In a democracy, allegations must be grounded in verifiable facts—names, dates, actions, and context. Without these, such claims remain hollow rhetoric. To date, no credible evidence has been presented to substantiate this narrative.

More importantly, the behavioral pattern of Prof. Nnaji contradicts the very essence of political intimidation. Politicians who are pressured out of relevance often retreat into silence, avoiding public scrutiny. Prof. Nnaji has done the exact opposite. He has remained visible, vocal, and intellectually engaged—granting interviews, issuing detailed statements, and articulating the rationale behind his political decisions. This is not the conduct of a man fleeing from competition; it is the mark of a leader guided by conviction and clarity of purpose.

Political realignment is neither new nor unusual in Nigeria’s democratic journey. Across party lines, leaders routinely reassess their positions based on ideology, strategy, and evolving national dynamics. Prof. Nnaji’s transition from the PDP to the (ADC) must therefore be understood within this broader context—as a deliberate and informed decision rooted in his vision for governance and his interpretation of Nigeria’s political trajectory.

Reducing such a calculated move to an act of fear is not only misleading but also diminishes the intellectual agency of a man whose global exposure and professional accomplishments speak volumes. Prof. Nnaji is a scholar of international repute, a legal mind tested on global platforms, and a public figure whose engagements have consistently reflected depth, courage, and foresight.

Indeed, democracy thrives on debate—but debate must be anchored on truth. Assertions without evidence do not enrich political discourse; they erode it. Until tangible proof is presented to support the claim that Prof. Nnaji “ran away,” it remains what it is: an unfounded allegation.

In the final analysis, Professor Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji stands not as a man intimidated by opposition, but as one driven by purpose. His journey reflects calculated decisions, not coerced exits; principled realignment, not political surrender. He is, by every measurable standard, a figure defined by courage, intellect, and an unyielding commitment to the ideals of leadership.

And as history continues to unfold, it will remember him not for the noise of baseless accusations, but for the substance of his contributions and the strength of his convictions.
