BREAKING!! Four Nigerian Lawmakers Suspended



The has suspended four councillors from the Akpabuyo Legislative Council for a period of 90 days over allegations of misconduct.

The decision was reached during plenary on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, following the consideration of a petition submitted by two councillors, Emmanuel Archibong and Bassey Ekpo. The petition accused the affected officials of harassment, intimidation, and aggressive conduct toward fellow lawmakers.

Those suspended include Innocent Mbukpa, Patrick Etim, Bassey Edet, and Tete Ubene.

Presenting the petition, Deputy Leader of the House, , alleged that the councillors relied on cult groups to threaten colleagues, including the leader of the councillors’ association. The petition further claimed that the group attacked council staff on March 23, 2026, leaving some individuals injured and damaging property.

During deliberations, condemned the actions, stressing that the accused failed to follow due process in addressing their grievances. Other members of the Assembly also supported the suspension, emphasizing the need for peaceful conflict resolution and describing the alleged behavior as unacceptable.

The Assembly invoked relevant provisions of the local government law empowering it to discipline officials accused of misconduct. It was agreed that the suspension would remain in effect pending the outcome of an investigation by the Committee on Judiciary, Public Service, Petitions, and Conflict Resolution.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House, , expressed concern over the incident and urged public office holders to uphold discipline and respect for the rule of law in the discharge of their duties.
