How Govt Official who stole iPhone 17 at APC Convention was arrested, handset recovered

An aide to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Wale Ajetunmobi, has narrated how his high-end mobile phone was stolen and later recovered during the recently concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) convention in Abuja.

Ajetunmobi disclosed that the incident occurred at the VVIP entrance of Eagle Square amid chaotic scenes caused by multiple security checkpoints and attempts by unauthorized individuals to gain access to the venue.

According to him, his iPhone 17 Pro Max was taken from his pocket during the confusion. Despite the loss, he continued participating in convention activities before later activating Apple’s tracking system using his iPad.

The device was initially traced to Wuse Zone 6, approximately 8 kilometres from the venue, and later to Karu, prompting him to seek assistance from the police.

Following swift intervention, a team led by the Scorpion Squad of the Nigeria Police tracked the suspect to a location near Karu Bridge. The operation, supported by real-time tracking technology, led officers to a roadside car lot where the suspect was identified.

The stolen phone was eventually recovered from a suspect identified as Mahmoud, who allegedly concealed the device in his clothing. The suspect, said to be affiliated with the Nasarawa State Ministry of Justice, was immediately arrested.

Ajetunmobi commended the professionalism and prompt response of the police officers involved in the operation, noting that their efforts ensured the successful recovery of the device.

The incident has, however, raised fresh concerns over security lapses at high-profile political events, particularly within restricted VVIP access areas.
