_Enugu State has further strengthened its reputation as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing innovation destinations following the successful conclusion of the second edition of the Enugu Tech Festival (ETF 2.0), a landmark technology gathering that attracted global attention, record participation, and renewed investor confidence in the state’s digital future. Tagged “Coal to Code: Energy in New Form,” the four-day festival held from February 24 to 27, 2026, at the Enugu International Conference Centre brought together policymakers, global technology firms, investors, academics, startups, development partners, and thousands of young innovators in what observers described as one of the most significant technology events ever hosted in Nigeria’s South-East region. Organisers confirmed a record-breaking physical attendance of 53,000 participants, surpassing the projected target of 50,000, while thousands more joined virtually from across the world. The event was broadcast live on Africa Independent Television (AIT) and reportedly ranked among the top five trending global events on social platforms during its run. Attendance figures showed sustained engagement across the four days, with 20,000 participants on Day One, 15,000 on Day Two, 13,000 on Day Three, and 5,000 on the closing day, a turnout widely interpreted as strong validation of Enugu’s deliberate transition from its historic coal economy to a modern knowledge-driven digital ecosystem.
_Declaring the festival open, Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, reaffirmed that technology and innovation remain central to his administration’s transformation agenda, describing the global economy as undergoing an economic renaissance powered by ideas, data, and innovation rather than physical assets. He noted that enterprises such as Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta have reshaped global systems and emphasised that Enugu has made a conscious decision to participate actively in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. According to him, the state has moved from concept to execution within three years through digitisation of governance processes, deployment of AI-embedded security systems, expansion of digital infrastructure, establishment of Smart Schools exposing students to robotics and artificial intelligence, and the integration of Geographic Information Systems into land administration to enhance transparency and efficiency. He urged young people to embrace emerging technologies, stressing that a century after Enugu became known for coal extraction, the present generation must be known for designing solutions that shape the future.
_Central to the success and vision of ETF 2.0 was the Convener of the festival and Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Engr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh, whose opening address provided both a philosophical direction and a practical roadmap for Enugu’s digital transformation journey. Welcoming distinguished guests, industry leaders, innovators, academia, development partners, and youths, Ezeh described the gathering as not merely another conference but a defining moment in Enugu’s technological evolution. He stated that the festival represents vision, execution, and commitment to transforming Enugu into a globally competitive digital economy, emphasising that innovation must move beyond conversations into measurable outcomes. Highlighting achievements recorded under the ministry, he noted that Enugu has emerged as the second-largest tech ecosystem in Nigeria through deliberate investments in human capital development, partnerships, and infrastructure. Thousands of youths, he said, have already been trained through various digital capacity programmes, while hackathons organised by the ministry have fostered creativity and produced practical technological solutions addressing real societal challenges.
_Ezeh further revealed that strategic partnerships, including collaboration with Norsken to establish Nigeria’s largest tech hub, alongside the expansion of innovation centres such as blockchain hubs and Risevest hubs, have significantly strengthened the state’s innovation ecosystem. According to him, the purpose of ETF 2026 extends beyond networking to transforming businesses through digital innovation, strengthening communities through collaboration, building sustainability through eco-friendly technological solutions, promoting creative problem-solving, and converting partnerships into measurable development outcomes. He outlined expected outcomes of the festival to include concrete partnership commitments, technology transfer roadmaps, pilot projects in agriculture, healthcare, and green energy, and the creation of a stronger ecosystem linking government, education, and private enterprise. He stressed that focused investment must translate into quantifiable growth and that innovation must serve society by addressing real challenges.
_Projecting into the future, the convener spoke extensively on ongoing digital transformation initiatives aligned with the governor’s vision, including real-time technology-driven security systems, smart green schools powered by digital tools, a digital judiciary aimed at improving case management efficiency, the ENGIS land administration system for transparency, e-wallet transportation platforms for seamless mobility, and a digital museum designed to preserve Enugu’s cultural heritage through immersive technology. In a strong call to action that drew loud applause from participants, Ezeh declared that Enugu represents opportunity rather than risk for investors, urging the private sector to embrace partnerships that drive shared prosperity while encouraging young innovators to move from ideas to execution. “Execution earns rewards,” he said, challenging youths to build solutions that outlive their generation and create lasting innovation legacies. He also called on policymakers to move beyond bureaucracy and actively enable innovation, insisting that collaboration across sectors remains the engine of sustainable growth. Ending his address with a symbolic message, he told participants that the future is already here and invited stakeholders to join in shaping a sustainable digital Enugu.
_The festival featured participation from international dignitaries including the Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm, and the Danish Consul General in Lagos, Mrs. Jette Bjerrum, who toured exhibition halls showcasing startups, robotics demonstrations, coding boot camps, and artificial intelligence-powered agricultural technologies. Observers commended what they described as a shift in Nigeria’s technology discourse from rhetoric to implementation. Day Two focused on investment and entrepreneurship, with a dedicated Deal Room connecting startups with venture capitalists from Lagos, Nairobi, London, and Dubai, leading to multiple follow-up funding engagements. Day Three spotlighted artificial intelligence, blockchain, and Web3 technologies, with live hackathons producing solutions in fintech inclusion, healthcare diagnostics, and climate-smart agriculture while hundreds of young participants received hands-on training in software engineering and cloud computing.
_A major highlight of ETF 2.0 was its youth empowerment initiative, which saw hundreds of young innovators receive laptops and tablets, while selected startup founders were awarded ₦10 million grants each to accelerate product development and market entry. Additional grants supported digital training programmes, prototype development, and the establishment of community tech hubs. Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, reaffirmed federal support for youth-driven enterprise and research commercialisation, while the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, described the festival as a landmark achievement that elevated Enugu’s global visibility. The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, praised Governor Mbah’s long-term vision, noting that the administration is building a sustainable technological foundation that will outlive political tenures, while business leader Dr. Leo Stan Ekeh encouraged youths to take advantage of the opportunities created by the evolving ecosystem.
_Another major highlight of the festival was the three-day free intensive hands-on training programme facilitated by 1Goal Analytics UK, which provided participants with practical exposure to some of the most in-demand digital skills shaping today’s global technology ecosystem. The training sessions, which attracted hundreds of young participants, covered critical areas including Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, as well as Project Management and Product Design. Designed to move beyond theoretical learning, the programme equipped attendees with real-world problem-solving skills, industry tools, and practical experience required to compete in the global digital workforce. Participants engaged in live simulations, collaborative projects, and expert-led mentoring sessions aimed at strengthening technical competence and employability. Organisers noted that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Enugu State Government and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology to build a digitally skilled population capable of driving innovation, attracting global opportunities, and positioning Enugu as a talent hub within Africa’s growing technology economy.
_Stakeholders observed that since Engr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh assumed leadership of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Enugu has witnessed measurable progress, including rapid expansion of tech hubs, increased youth participation in digital skills programmes, attraction of international partnerships, integration of technology into governance and education systems, and growing investor confidence in the state’s innovation ecosystem. ETF 2.0, many analysts say, represents the culmination of coordinated policy execution aligned with the visionary leadership of Governor Peter Mbah rather than a standalone event.
_The festival concluded with innovation showcases, awards, and cultural performances, organisers reiterated that the Enugu Tech Festival is designed as a long-term catalyst for economic transformation. Reflecting on the outcome, Engr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh described the event as a foundation for sustained growth and expressed confidence that Enugu’s ambition to build a globally recognised technology ecosystem is rapidly becoming reality. With record participation, global visibility, youth empowerment outcomes, and concrete investment conversations achieved, ETF 2.0 has firmly positioned Enugu as a rising digital powerhouse a state redefining its identity from coal to code and from extraction to innovation.
