The prospects of the re-election of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, as Executive Governor of Enugu State received a significant boost yesterday as the Executive Council and leading figures of the Council of Traditional Rulers in Nsukka Senatorial Zone reaffirmed their support for Governor Mbah’s re-election in 2027. The well-attended meeting, convened by the Zonal Council chaired by His Royal Majesty (HRM), Igwe Dr Herbert Nwanosike Ukuta, JP, the Agbalakata III of Iggah Ancient Kingdom in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA), represents over 157 traditional rulers across the six LGAs of Nsukka zone.
The Council expressed this position while receiving a delegation of the Peter Mbah Continuity Group (PMCG), which visited to brief members on the group’s mission, vision, and activities, and to seek royal blessings. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Convener of PMCG, Dr. Martilord Ifeanyichi - a physician and health policy scholar - explained that PMCG is a grassroots and diaspora-supported organisation mobilising support across communities to ensure the re-election of Governor Peter Mbah in 2027. He noted that the movement emerged from the collective desire to sustain the State’s current developmental trajectory.
According to Dr. Martilord: “We have witnessed the transformative leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, and we believe continuity is essential. The reward for good work is more work, and there is no need changing a winning team. The Governor’s ambitious vision to grow Enugu State’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion has warranted a deliberately crafted, integrated, and multidimensional approach to development in which no sector is left behind. It is our duty to ensure this momentum is sustained.”
Among the key achievements cited were:
• Smart Schools across 260 wards
• Type II Primary Health Centres across 260 wards
• Modernisation of the state transport system
• Establishment and expansion of Enugu Air
• The International Conference Centre (ICC) and 5-Star ICC Hotel
• Renovation of the Presidential Hotel
• Thousands of kilometres of newly constructed roads
• Dualisation of the Ugwu Ogo Nike - Opi Nsukka Road
• The Enugu International Hospital
• Revitalisation of previously moribund industries such as the Nigergas Company Limited, Sunrise Flour Mills, and Enugu United Plam Products Limited.
• Attraction of Haier Company for digital gadget production
• Strategic power sector reforms and investments towards energy sufficiency in the State
In their response, Council members commended the PMCG initiative and unanimously declared their support for Governor Mbah’s re-election. In his contribution, HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Okeh of Ichi Agu in Igbo-Eze South LGA, remarked that the Governor’s achievements are visible to the blind and audible to the deaf, stressing that such performance deserves a second term. Similarly, the HRM Igwe Ubaka Eze, Ejuona III of Ifruoka Amalla Ancient Kingdom in Udenu LGA and Chief Provost of the Zonal Council, declared that in his community, no campaign would be necessary, affirming their firm support.
In his concluding remarks, the Chairman of the Council, Igwe Agbalakata III, noted that Nsukka Land has significantly benefited from the administration, particularly as the zone accounts for 102 wards, thus receiving the largest share of ward-based interventions such as Smart Schools and Type II Health Centres. He emphasised that while traditional rulers remain non-partisan, they are committed to continuous development in the State and therefore support initiatives that advance the progress of their communities.
In a telephone conversation, HRM Igwe Okechukwu Agbaji, Enyimba of Unadu and Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers in Igbo-Eze South LGA, who was in an official function in his LGA with Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the First Lady of Enugu State, aligned himself with the resolutions of the meeting and encouraged PMCG to proceed with confidence in its mission.
The highlight of the engagement was the collective royal blessings and prayers offered to the PMCG delegation for success in its mission.
PMCG continues to mobilise grassroots support and engage key stakeholders across the State toward ensuring continuity of good governance in 2027. It will be recalled that on February 14, 2026, the Group hosted a Valentine’s Day get-together for APC stakeholders and supporters in Ezzi/Ngwu ward, Iheakpu-Awka, Igbo-Eze South LGA, where it expressed appreciation for their steadfast support for His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, and Barr. Ugo Ukwueze, the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South LGA, urging renewed commitment ahead of the 2027 elections.
