BREAKING!! State Assembly Initiates Impeachment Process Against Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The notice of impeachment was presented during plenary by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala, who said the action followed the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
According to Dala, the impeachment notice contains several allegations connected to Abdussalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024, as well as his current role as deputy governor of the state.
He told the Assembly that the allegations revolve around diversion of local government funds, abuse of office, and actions considered impeachable under the constitution.
Dala alleged that while serving as Commissioner for Local Government and supervising the administration of the state’s 44 local government councils, the deputy governor participated in the diversion of funds meant for local government operations.
He further claimed that between June 2023 and January 2024, Abdussalam allegedly received a monthly kickback of ₦1.5 million from each of the 44 local government areas.
According to the Majority Leader, the arrangement amounted to ₦66 million every month for seven months, totaling ₦462 million, which he said constituted a breach of public trust and undermined confidence in public governance.
The Assembly is expected to follow constitutional procedures in the impeachment process, including formally notifying the deputy governor of the allegations and determining the next steps as stipulated by the constitution.
As of the time of filing this report, Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo had not publicly responded to the allegations.
