Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Kano State and son of former governor and NNPP leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from his position.
The resignation became public on Monday, January 26, 2026, through a personal statement issued by Kwankwaso after stepping down from the Kano State Executive Council under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In the statement, Kwankwaso disclosed that he was leaving office with mixed feelings, expressing gratitude to Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano State. He noted that his tenure offered him valuable experience and lessons, adding that he deeply appreciated the trust reposed in him during his time in government.
The former commissioner emphasized his commitment to the welfare of young people in the state, expressing hope that the Kano State Government would continue to provide adequate care, opportunities, and support for the youth. He also voiced optimism that sports programmes and development projects in the state would witness sustained growth in the years ahead.
Kwankwaso concluded his statement by praying for continued peace and progress in Kano State, while wishing the government and the people well.
His resignation comes just days after his principal, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has continued to reshape the state’s political landscape.
The development has further heightened political tension and speculation in Kano, as observers view Kwankwaso’s exit as part of the wider realignment following the governor’s reported switch of party allegiance.
