A popular Enugu-based social media influencer, Senator Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, has been remanded in prison following his arraignment before a Magistrates’ Court in Enugu.
Ugwuanyi was arraigned on Tuesday by the Enugu State Police Command and subsequently remanded by the presiding magistrate.
According to the charge sheet, Ugwuanyi allegedly posted a message on his Facebook page on January 15, 2026, which the police described as cyberbullying and stalking directed at the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia. The alleged offence is said to contravene Section 24(2)(a)(b) and is punishable under Section 24(2)(c)(i) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended in 2024).
The development was confirmed by Ugwuanyi’s counsel, Barrister Frank Agbowo, who disclosed the outcome in a Facebook post. He stated that despite legal submissions and cited provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Enugu State, 2017, which he said empowered the court to grant bail, the magistrate ordered Ugwuanyi’s remand on what was described as a non-bailable charge.
Barrister Agbowo added that the defence team would continue to pursue justice, expressing optimism that the matter would be resolved in due course.
Ugwuanyi is being tried for allegedly defaming the Secretary to the Enugu State Government.
