The Federal Government has directed electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and meter installers to immediately stop collecting any form of payment from consumers for electricity meters.
The directive is aimed at curbing illegal charges and protecting electricity consumers from exploitation by service providers. Authorities warned that any DisCo staff or meter installer found demanding or accepting money for meter installation would face strict prosecution under the law.
The government’s decision follows growing complaints from customers who alleged that some operators were extorting them for meter installations despite existing regulatory provisions that prohibit such charges.
Emphasising its commitment to transparency and fairness in the power sector, the Federal Government reiterated that electricity meters are to be provided to eligible consumers at no extra cost. Consumers were also urged to report any form of extortion or illegal demand by electricity officials to the appropriate authorities to ensure swift enforcement of the ban.
The move reinforces the government’s stance on safeguarding public interest and eliminating abusive practices in electricity distribution across the country.
