The Enugu State Government has unveiled a groundbreaking green energy stove, designed to promote safe cooking solutions in Nigeria and Africa while combating deforestation, climate change, and ecosystem losses.
Known as the Enugu Stove, the innovation is produced with 100% local content and powered by smokeless, odourless coal briquettes, making it a sustainable alternative to gas and kerosene stoves.
Speaking to newsmen in Enugu, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Lawrence Eze, described the stove as a revolutionary energy solution that guarantees safety, affordability, and environmental protection.
He noted that the days of gas explosions and kerosene stove accidents at homes and eateries would be a thing of the past, as the Enugu Stove is designed with two insulated chambers that retain heat while keeping the outer surface cool to touch.
“The economic benefit is enormous. The stove is a one-time purchase, while the coal briquette—a cheap, purified and dehydro-carbonised coal product—is the recurring fuel source,” Eze explained.
The stove comes in three sizes—for students, families, and commercial use—and burns gently like an electric stove, producing only steam without smoke or odour.
Highlighting the environmental impact, Eze said the initiative would reduce tree felling, discourage charcoal production, and protect forests and vegetation.
To ensure sustainability, Governor Peter Mbah has established the Ministry of Energy and Solid Minerals to oversee coal mining and supply for the briquette factories. Plans are underway to set up four coal briquette production plants, one in each senatorial zone of the state, to ensure affordability and accessibility across communities.
“This is part of Governor Mbah’s vision for a sustainable energy mix that protects the environment and promotes green technology,” the commissioner added.
With Enugu State’s abundant coal reserves, the Enugu Stove is positioned as a game-changer in renewable energy, clean cooking technology, and eco-friendly innovation in Nigeria.
