Tragedy struck in Kadauri village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where at least 10 miners have been confirmed dead and five others injured following the collapse of an illegal mining site. The incident occurred after persistent rains destabilised the ground, causing the pit to cave in.
Local sources disclosed that the miners and their managers failed to observe necessary safety precautions, despite the obvious risks posed by the weather. Rescue operations were ongoing as of press time, with fears that the death toll could rise. “So far, ten bodies have been recovered from the rubble. The injured have been moved to a nearby medical facility for treatment,” a source revealed.
The area where the collapse occurred is also notorious for banditry and related criminal activities, raising additional concerns for rescue teams and residents. Authorities confirmed that all the victims were engaged in illegal mining at the site, which had no proper safety oversight.
The disaster follows recent unrest at the Marrarabar Yauri gold mining site in Kebbi State, where violent clashes between foreign and local miners left one person dead and several properties destroyed. Security operatives have since intensified patrols in affected areas to prevent further loss of lives and maintain order.
