BREAKING: Enugu EFCC Under Fire Over Alleged Unlawful Detentions

A petition has accused senior operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Enugu of unlawful detention, abuse of power, and harassment following the detention of Chief Dr. Evaristus Okwor, the traditional Prime Minister of Amaeke Ngwo Community in Udi Local Government Area.

The petition, signed by Chief O.A.U. Onyema of O.A.U. Onyema & Co. Legal Practitioners and addressed to EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, alleged that Okwor had been held since September 2, 2025, without just cause, despite a Federal High Court order restraining the commission from arresting or detaining him.

According to the petition, EFCC officials, identified as Ms. Adaora Oragudosi and her associate, Miss Lilian O., were behind the ordeal. They were accused of coercing Okwor’s surety to withdraw his bond, humiliating the community leader by photographing him with a board hung around his neck, and demanding a post-dated cheque of N12 million before granting bail.

The lawyers stated that Okwor had already responded to EFCC’s queries regarding a disputed N12 million land transaction and insisted that the matter was purely civil. They described the detention as “wickedness, abuse of power, and man’s inhumanity to man.”

Onyema urged the EFCC Chairman to intervene, release Okwor unconditionally, and ensure the operatives respect court orders. Copies of the petition were also sent to President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser.
