Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has expressed deep grief and outrage over the death of Barrister Ndubuisi Udutchay, a 33-year-old lawyer who lost his life after being attacked by gunmen in Enugu State.
Udutchay’s tragic death, which occurred on July 3, 2025, has once again exposed the precarious state of security in the Southeast and the inadequacies of Nigeria’s public healthcare system. According to Ohanaeze, the young lawyer’s life might have been saved if the region had both effective security structures and well-equipped medical facilities capable of handling emergency cases.
In a strongly worded statement, the organisation described the incident as “a painful reminder of the rising insecurity ravaging Igboland,” stressing that the frequent attacks, kidnappings, and killings have instilled fear among residents and eroded confidence in government’s ability to protect lives and property.
The group further called on both federal and state authorities to step up urgent measures in tackling the dual challenges of insecurity and poor healthcare delivery, warning that the continued neglect of these sectors is fueling avoidable deaths and worsening public despair.
Ohanaeze also commiserated with the family of the late barrister, describing his demise as not only a personal loss to his loved ones but also a blow to the future of the legal profession in the Southeast.
The incident adds to the growing number of violent attacks that have plagued Enugu and other parts of the region, raising concerns over the safety of young professionals and the general public.
