A 19-year-old young woman, Miss Aaue Samuel Olubari, has been unveiled as the All Progressives Congress (APC) councillorship candidate for Bangha Ward 7 in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, stirring mixed reactions across the political space.
Olubari, who was officially presented by the APC Khana Chairman, Hon. Barile Ebenezer, during a ward-to-ward sensitization campaign on Tuesday, is now the youngest contender in the forthcoming Rivers State Local Government Election.
While her emergence has been hailed by some as a bold step toward youth inclusion and representation in grassroots politics, others have raised concerns that at just 19, she may be too young to navigate the complexities of local governance.
Observers note that the role of a councillor demands a deep understanding of policy, governance, and community development, skills that often require years of experience and maturity. Critics argue that youthful enthusiasm, though admirable, may not be sufficient for handling the intricacies of leadership in a diverse community like Khana.
On the other hand, advocates for youth participation point out that political offices should not be reserved only for the elderly, stressing that younger voices deserve a platform in decision-making processes.
The development has reignited conversations about the balance between youthful representation and readiness for governance, with many awaiting the outcome of the elections to see if the 19-year-old can make history or if her candidacy will fuel calls for stricter eligibility guidelines in local politics.
