Residents of Enugu State have taken to the streets to protest the continued detention of Mr. Bright Ngene, a member of the Labour Party.
Ngene, who was recently declared winner of the Enugu South Urban rerun election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been in prison for months following a ruling by a Magistrate Court in the state.
The rerun election had faced three failed attempts due to violence before the fourth attempt also witnessed clashes involving members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Hon. Uche Nnaji. Despite the disruptions, INEC eventually declared Ngene as the winner.
His wife, while addressing the media, attributed his incarceration to political tussles surrounding the election.
Protesters are describing Ngene as a prisoner of conscience and are calling for his immediate release.
The demonstrations come at a time when the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference is ongoing in Enugu, drawing wider attention to the unfolding political and legal controversy in the state.
More details are expected as the situation develops.
