In a bold and unexpected move, the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, arrived in Benin City yesterday, shrugging off earlier warnings issued by Governor Monday D7 of Edo State.
Despite the governor’s controversial statement suggesting that Obi should seek permission before any visit to the state, the respected statesman walked confidently into the ancient city — not with defiance, but with purpose.
Obi's visit was centered around a prestigious book launch held in honour of the Esama of Benin, a revered traditional and political figure in Edo. The event, graced by dignitaries and high-profile guests, became even more electric with Obi’s presence.
Speaking on the visit, Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Leader of the Labour Party, confirmed that she personally accompanied Obi to the event. “We had a fruitful time in Benin, not only honouring the Esama but also engaging in deep conversations about the future of our great party,” she said.
The senator added that Obi was warmly received by the people, who cheered his presence, showing overwhelming support — a clear sign that the former governor's influence remains undiminished across regions.
Observers say the visit was not only symbolic but strategic. Coming amid political tensions and internal wranglings in several states, Peter Obi’s silent message was loud and clear: his political relevance cannot be silenced by threats or gatekeeping.
Once again, the “people’s candidate” proves that his connection with Nigerians — North to South — is not dictated by protocol, but by presence.
