The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, ordered the immediate sealing of the X-ray section of the Poly General Hospital, Asata, located in the heart of the state capital.
The action followed an unscheduled inspection tour by the Commissioner alongside a team from the Ministry of Health. During the visit, several regulatory breaches and unsafe practices were uncovered at the facility's radiology unit.
Prof. Ugwu stated that the closure was imperative to safeguard the health and safety of patients, hospital staff, and the surrounding community, stressing that improper handling of radiology equipment posed serious hazards.
“This action will serve as a warning as Governor Peter Mbah will not compromise on the quality of healthcare delivery,” he warned.
The Commissioner cited major violations, including the absence of adequate radiation shielding and the failure to adhere to basic safety protocols, as grounds for the enforcement action.
He emphasized that any health institution operating below approved standards would face strict penalties, noting that the welfare of citizens remains a top priority for the state government.
The Commissioner assured that the X-ray unit will only resume operations after all identified violations have been corrected and a follow-up inspection has been satisfactorily conducted by the ministry.
