The family of Ruth Otabor, younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Josephine Otabor popularly known as Phyna, has announced her passing. Ruth died on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m., after battling for her life following a tragic accident involving a Dangote truck.
The announcement was conveyed to the public through Eko Solicitors & Advocates, who represent the Otabor family. Justice Segun Ojienoh, speaking on behalf of the law firm, confirmed that the family instructed them to release the sad news.
“With a heavy heart the Family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their Daughter, Sister, and Mother on this 31st Day of August, 2025 at about 06:30Hrs. The Family is presently grieving and will appreciate to be given a private moment to mourn the departed,” the statement read.
Ruth Otabor, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, had been struggling for survival after sustaining severe injuries in the accident that occurred on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The incident resulted in the amputation of one of her legs.
Her sister, Phyna, had previously cried out on social media, accusing Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and his company of neglect and attempts to shield those responsible for the accident. She lamented that Ruth’s condition had deteriorated, affecting her lungs, bladder, and reproductive organs, while also alleging delays in efforts to fly her abroad for treatment.
The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
