The family of Hon. Ernest Okafor has confirmed his release after spending several days in captivity. According to reliable sources, his freedom was secured following the payment of a ₦16 million ransom to his abductors.
Hon. Okafor, father of Engr. Obinna Okafor, was kidnapped on August 16, 2025, in front of his residence at Awa, Orumba Local Government Area of Anambra State. His abduction had sparked widespread fear and heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the region.
While his release brought some relief, the incident was overshadowed by tragedy as his brother, Chief Okwuchukwu Okafor, popularly known as Ejiamatu, lost his life during the ordeal.
Until his death, Ejiamatu was the Chairman of Market 3, Eke Awka, and head of the Eke Awka Task Force. His passing has thrown the Awka business community into mourning, with traders and colleagues describing him as a committed and dedicated leader.
