The Federal Government of Nigeria has closed down over 13.5 million social media accounts , including Nigerian Celebrities and removed nearly 59 million offensive posts across platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X for violating the nation’s Code of Practice.
This was revealed in the 2024 Compliance Report submitted by major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and others to regulators including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Speaking on the development, NITDA spokesperson Hajiya Hadiza Umar said the move was aimed at ensuring online safety and enforcing Nigerian laws. She stressed that the Federal Government would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to promote transparency, strengthen digital literacy, and create a safer digital environment for all Nigerians.
The action comes as part of government efforts to tackle cybercrime, misinformation, hate speech, and other harmful online activities threatening national security and social harmony.
