A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has stirred controversy with a bold declaration that the persistent killings and abductions in the Southeast region of Nigeria are not the handiwork of Fulani herdsmen, as widely believed, but rather the result of internal sabotage by some individuals from within the Igbo community.

Speaking out amid rising insecurity across the region, Igbokwe expressed deep concern over the incessant attacks, kidnappings, and destruction attributed to so-called “unknown gunmen.” In a social media post, he claimed that many have wrongly accused Hausa/Fulani herders of crimes they did not commit, thereby misdirecting public anger and attention.

> “The blatant and pathological lies about the killings and destruction in the South East can no longer stand,” he wrote.

“It is Igbo killing Igbo, it is Igbo destroying Igboland and putting the blame on Hausa/Fulani herdsmen. This is not our culture. This is sad.”

According to Igbokwe, the acts of violence are being perpetrated by individuals from the region who are intent on destroying their own communities for undisclosed motives. He described the current narrative blaming outsiders as deceptive and dangerous, insisting that the Southeast must look inward for solutions to its worsening security crisis.

The APC stalwart’s comments have already sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some supporting his claims and others condemning them as divisive and insensitive.

As insecurity continues to escalate in the region, Igbokwe’s comments may add fuel to the ongoing debate over the root causes of violence in Igboland and the identity of the true actors behind the chaos.
