Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, touched down in Abuja on Monday afternoon to a rousing hero’s welcome following their triumphant campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they clinched a record-extending 10th continental title.
The team arrived aboard a chartered ValuJet aircraft from Rabat, Morocco, where they defeated the host nation in a thrilling 3–2 final on Saturday night. Their victory solidified Nigeria’s legendary status in African women’s football, with an unbeaten run throughout the tournament.
A large crowd of jubilant fans, senior officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC), and representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) gathered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to welcome the champions.
According to a statement by the NSC, the team will embark on a city-wide victory parade through the streets of Abuja, culminating in a reception at the Presidential Villa, where they are expected to be hosted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“There will also be a live concert at the Eagles Square this evening from 7 p.m. featuring top Nigerian celebrities to celebrate the Falcons’ exceptional achievement,” the statement read.
The Super Falcons had a remarkable tournament in Morocco, winning all six of their matches, including a dramatic semi-final victory over South Africa, the defending champions. In the final, they came from behind to beat a determined Moroccan side, silencing a packed home crowd in Rabat.
Adding to the national pride, four Nigerian players — Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie, and Esther Okoronkwo — were named in CAF’s Team of the Tournament for their outstanding individual performances.
This 2024 WAFCON title marks Nigeria’s 10th win in 13 editions of the competition — further proving the Super Falcons' dominance in African women's football. The celebrations are expected to continue across the country in the coming days.
