A rogue hippopotamus that had been terrorizing communities in southern Adamawa State has finally been captured, bringing relief to residents of the affected areas.
The animal, which was responsible for the death of a young man in Banjiram village, Guyuk Local Government Area, was apprehended by some vigilant youths in Shelleng Local Government Area after it strayed into the community.
According to local reports, the hippopotamus had been displaced from its natural habitat near the Kiri Dam following a devastating flood that caused nearby rivers to overflow, disturbing both households and wildlife.
The tragic incident in Banjiram on July 28, 2025, where the animal claimed the life of a resident, prompted an urgent community response. Alarmed residents mobilized efforts, and with coordinated action, the dangerous animal was eventually subdued.
Authorities have yet to confirm what will be done with the captured hippopotamus.
