BREAKING! Tinubu Sacks Nkiruka Madueke, Appoints New Omotenioye Director-General of National Council on Climate Change

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s commitment to climate action and sustainable development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).

Mrs. Majekodunmi takes over from Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the pioneer head of the Council, who was appointed in June 2024. President Tinubu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 31, 2025, expressed appreciation to the outgoing Director-General for her vision, dedication, and for laying a solid foundation for the Council’s growth and relevance within Nigeria’s environmental governance structure.

A seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with over 17 years of experience, Mrs. Majekodunmi has earned a reputation both locally and internationally for her work on renewable energy development, carbon markets, and climate governance frameworks. Her vast expertise spans collaborations with global development partners, multilateral institutions, and national governments on projects geared towards climate resilience, low-carbon transition, and environmental justice.

Before her appointment, she served as the Financial Adviser to the NCCC, where she was instrumental in designing Nigeria’s climate finance strategy and aligning national policies with international climate obligations, including the Paris Agreement. She also led technical negotiations and consultations around climate adaptation funding, carbon credit trading, and green economy initiatives.

The appointment of Mrs. Majekodunmi, according to the Presidency, reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s resolve to mainstream climate change as not just an environmental concern, but as a core driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion. The President emphasized that addressing climate change requires experienced, innovative leadership that can position Nigeria as a leading voice in global climate conversations.

Environmental stakeholders, climate activists, and development partners have widely welcomed the announcement, describing Mrs. Majekodunmi’s appointment as a timely and strategic decision. Many expressed confidence in her capacity to consolidate on existing gains and chart a more ambitious path for Nigeria’s climate transition agenda.

As she assumes office, the new Director-General is expected to focus on mobilizing climate finance, strengthening climate data systems, expanding renewable energy access, deepening Nigeria’s carbon market participation, and engaging sub-national governments and the private sector in the climate response framework.

The National Council on Climate Change, established as a statutory body to coordinate Nigeria’s climate action across all sectors, has increasingly become a focal institution for the country’s environmental and development aspirations. With Mrs. Majekodunmi at the helm, expectations are high for a more inclusive, transparent, and impactful climate governance system.
