BREAKING!! SAD NEWS! Former Head of State is Dead!

Governor Otti Honours Aguiyi‑Ironsi with Wreath‑Laying Ceremony

Abia State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has approved a special wreath-laying ceremony to honour Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major‑General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi‑Ironsi, GCFR, who was assassinated on July 29, 1966, alongside his host, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, then Military Governor of the Western Region.

A statue of the late General stands tall at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, serving as a constant reminder of his sacrifice and legacy.

According to a statement from the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, Ambassador High Chief Thomas Aguiyi‑Ironsi, CON, the late Head of State’s first son and a former Minister of Defence, will lay a wreath at his father’s tomb on behalf of the family, friends, and well-wishers both in Nigeria and in the diaspora.

The family expressed deep gratitude to Governor Otti, describing his gesture as “gracious and deeply appreciated,” adding that Aguiyi‑Ironsi remains “a symbol of sacrifice and patriotism whose memory continues to inspire generations.”

As part of the solemn event, prayers will be offered for the repose of the late leader’s soul and for lasting peace in Nigeria.

An invitation has also been extended to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to participate in the commemoration.

Meanwhile, there are strong speculations that Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi‑Ironsi may soon be appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Switzerland or as a Special Envoy. Many observers consider such an appointment a fitting recognition of both his father’s legacy and his own distinguished service.

Nearly 60 years after his tragic assassination, the remembrance ceremony stands as a powerful tribute to a former Head of State who died in July and left behind a legacy of courage, service, and sacrifice that Nigeria continues to honour.
