The Oyo State Chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned a disturbing incident involving a masquerader identified as Ladoinka, who allegedly assaulted a Muslim cleric and attacked another individual during a public procession at Oja Oba market in the Ogbomoso area of Oyo State on Friday, July 25, 2025.
According to a press release signed by the chapter’s secretary, Alhaji Molaib Ibrahim Ayelabola, MURIC revealed that the masquerader violently snatched the cap off an Imam who was walking along the street. The group also alleged that the same masquerader later stormed Oara market and used a cutlass to attack another Muslim.
Describing the attacks as “absurd, criminal, demeaning, nonsensical and completely unacceptable,” MURIC stressed that such actions run contrary to the principles of “Dialogue, Not Violence.” The group expressed deep concern over what it described as the rise of “masquerade hooliganism” in an increasingly multi-religious society and called on government stakeholders to take swift and decisive action.
“In a multicultural and religiously diverse state like ours, peacebuilding efforts must not be jeopardized. Therefore, we urgently call on all custodians of the Egungun festival to take immediate and firm action,” the statement read.
MURIC also noted alleged reports of retaliatory actions by Muslims in Ogbomoso and appealed for calm and restraint. “Two wrongs do not make a right. We appeal to Muslims to exercise patience,” the group stated.
Additionally, MURIC called on security agencies to monitor masquerade activities and ensure they do not lead to violence or religious conflict. “These are the kinds of actions that can escalate crises,” it warned.
Particularly worrisome to the group is the forthcoming Oloju Masquerade Festival scheduled for Monday, July 28, in Ibadan. Citing reports from concerned bodies, MURIC stated there is growing anxiety that the festival may lead to further unrest.
The group called on the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies to protect the safety and religious rights of all citizens. They emphasized that no one should be persecuted on account of their faith.
In its closing statement, MURIC urged Muslim communities across the state to remain calm and await official intervention.
