Enugu’s Animation Revolution: EMAT Batch 2 Ushers in the Next Generation of African Creatives

In a bold stride toward transforming Africa’s creative economy, Enugu State has officially launched Batch 2 of the Enugu Magic Labs Animation Training (EMAT) — a flagship initiative equipping young creatives with world-class animation and digital storytelling skills. Building on the monumental success of the first cohort, this second phase marks another significant leap in the state’s commitment to youth empowerment, digital innovation, and global industry relevance.

The EMAT program, powered by the Enugu State Government through the Enugu SME Center, and executed in strategic partnership with the globally renowned Magic Labs Studio, is more than just a training program — it is a direct pipeline to the booming global animation industry. With the animation sector valued at over $394 billion, Enugu is positioning its youth to seize global opportunities in 2D illustration, 3D motion design, and digital content production.

*Building Global Talent from Enugu*

Over the past few months, the inaugural EMAT cohort has impressed stakeholders with their creativity, technical agility, and storytelling excellence. From complete novices to confident digital artists, the transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.

The impact of Batch 1 ignited widespread interest and demand from across the state. Responding to this momentum, Batch 2 has been unveiled to train another 400+ young talents — deepening the talent pool and reinforcing Enugu’s role as a creative and innovation hub in Africa.

*What Sets EMAT Apart??*

The EMAT program blends global best practices with local opportunity. Key highlights of this transformative opportunity include:

✅ Elite-Level Mentorship: Participants receive hands-on instruction from professionals who have worked with industry giants like Netflix, Disney, and top African studios.

✅ Industry-Aligned Curriculum: The program features a globally competitive syllabus covering 2D and 3D animation techniques, motion graphics, storyboarding, and visual storytelling.

✅ Massive Accessibility: With up to 80% subsidized tuition, EMAT ensures that young creatives from all backgrounds can participate, regardless of financial standing.

✅ Real-World Project Integration: The training model emphasizes portfolio development, industry simulation, and collaborative creativity — preparing participants for both employment and entrepreneurship.

Fueling the Creative Economy

The EMAT program is a strategic pillar under Governor Dr. Peter Mbah’s digital transformation agenda, which emphasizes innovation, youth employment, and the development of a knowledge-based economy in Enugu State. It aligns directly with his administration’s broader objectives to create high-value jobs, stimulate the digital economy, and enhance private sector competitiveness.

Speaking on the program’s expansion, Hon. Arinze Chilo-Offiah, Special Adviser to the Governor on Digital Economy and MSMEs and Director General of the Enugu SME Center, noted:

"We are not just training animators; we are building the creative workforce that will shape Africa’s digital storytelling future. EMAT is unlocking a world of possibilities for our youth—from global freelancing to studio work, and even starting their own animation ventures. We are proud of what we’ve achieved, and even more excited for what’s ahead."
