BREAKING: EFCC Arrests Former State Assembly Speaker Over Alleged ₦2.5bn Money Laundering, Abuse of Office

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Mr. Moses Thomas Sule, a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, alongside 14 other ex-lawmakers, over allegations of money laundering and abuse of office.

According to a statement from the EFCC’s Makurdi Zonal Directorate, the arrest followed multiple petitions from concerned citizens of Plateau State, accusing the former legislators of violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and breaching public procurement laws during their short tenure.

The arrested lawmakers include:

  • Gwottson Fom
  • Sani Abubakar
  • Jwe Philip Gwom
  • Thomas Dantong
  • Happiness Mathew Akawu
  • Cornelius Dotyok
  • Agbalak Ibrahim
  • Danjuma Azi
  • Fwangje Bala Ndat
  • Salome Tanimu Wanglet
  • Namba Rimuyat
  • Nimchak Rims
  • Ishaku Maren
  • Paul Datugun

The EFCC disclosed that during their six-month tenure, the Plateau State Government procured luxury vehicles worth an estimated ₦2.5 billion for the lawmakers. However, upon leaving office, the lawmakers allegedly failed to return the vehicles as mandated.

As efforts by the state government to retrieve the vehicles proved unsuccessful, another fleet worth approximately ₦2 billion had to be purchased for the incoming legislators, resulting in further financial strain.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects would be charged to court soon. “The former Speaker and other members will soon be charged to court,” he said.

The EFCC emphasized that the ongoing investigation is part of its broader mission to ensure accountability and protect public resources from misuse by government officials.
