In a major shake-up aimed at strengthening governance in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of 36 individuals to the governing councils of various federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.

Among the appointees are Hon. Chijioke Paul Okeifufe from Enugu State, who has been appointed to the Governing Council of the Federal University, Dutse in Jigawa State, and Hon. Chidi Nwogu from Imo State, who will serve on the council of the African Aviation and Aerospace University, Abuja.

The appointments were made public on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, through an official statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. The statement noted that the appointments are part of the President's broader effort to fill existing vacancies and reinvigorate leadership within federal tertiary institutions.

Hon. Okeifufe’s inclusion has been hailed as a recognition of Enugu State’s growing contribution to national development, especially in the field of education. He is widely respected for his commitment to youth empowerment and education reform. Similarly, Hon. Chidi Nwogu’s appointment to the prestigious aviation-focused university underscores the federal government's confidence in his capacity to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s emerging aerospace education landscape.

Other notable appointments include:

  • Dr. Folashade Mulikat Kareem – University of Jos, Plateau State
  • Dipe Olusina Adeniyi – Federal University of Technology, Ikot-Abasi, Akwa Ibom State
  • Hon. Goodluck Opiah – Federal College of Education, Odugbo, Benue State

The new council members are expected to assume their duties immediately and work towards ensuring improved policy direction, management efficiency, and academic excellence within their respective institutions.

This strategic move by the Tinubu administration marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s education sector for global competitiveness.
